Re-branding the Corridor for a more regional edge | Business 380

When John Miller describes where he works to someone unfamiliar with Iowa, he starts by telling them he?s four hours west of Chicago.

He then asks if they?re familiar with Interstate 80 and the Mississippi River.

Miller is co-owner of Cedar Rapids-based Hybrid Transit Systems Inc., a freight broker that does business nationally and internationally.

As businesses that compete globally know, you need to be on the map. And that?s just not the case for much of the Cedar Rapids-Iowa City corridor, according to area business leaders.

But an effort is under way to change that, and the first push came earlier this year with the re-branding of ?Iowa?s Technology Corridor? as ?Iowa?s Creative Corridor.?

Creative Corridor was selected to more accurately convey the region?s blend of art, science and technology, said members of the Corridor Business Alliance task force that led the initiative.

The goal is to have the area seen as one region, rather than separate communities.

Think Silicon Valley, the Research Triangle in North Carolina or Austin, Texas. That may seem a lofty target, but the people behind the Creative Corridor effort have set their sights that high.

(Laurie Harker illustration)

Businesses would benefit, they say, if the area can get there.

If a company is seeking to relocate, already being known through the Iowa?s Creative Corridor brand could help the Cedar Rapids-Iowa City area at least be considered, said Nancy Quellhorst, president and CEO of the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce.

For one, it would create a vibe, an emotional connection, she said. Say ?Silicon Valley? and technology comes to mind.

Also, it would help the area be viewed as a region. Site selectors may be looking for an area with 350,000 people, for example, and the initial work is often done by a computer program, Quellhorst said.

The census puts Cedar Rapids? population at 126,000, Iowa City?s at 68,000. The metropolitan statistical area of each has an estimated 260,000 and 155,000 people, respectively, for a combined 415,000.

?The advantage that we have by being identified as a region, ergo having that higher population number, could make a huge difference,? Quellhorst said.

SELLING ITSELF

It also could attract talented people to the Corridor.

Phil Larson said he recruits people nationally as director of the Iowa City office of Shive-Hattery, an architecture and engineering firm headquartered in Cedar Rapids and with offices elsewhere in Iowa and the Midwest.

People from outside the state often view Eastern Iowa as being in the middle of nowhere and boring, he noted. Once people accept a job they often are happy and stay, he said ? but it?s unknown how many people don?t even apply.

Shive-Hattery is supportive of the Iowa?s Creative Corridor brand, and Larson said that instead of his having to sell the area to people, it?d be nice if it sold itself.

?We have a great story,? he said. ?We just need to get it out.?

Hybrid Transit Systems?s Miller believes the re-branding is a good idea and could be good for business.

But he added that the concept of a place such as Silicon Valley emerged because of what happened there, not because of a name.

Iowa?s Creative Corridor backers recognize it will take a long time, probably decades, for the name to stick and the brand to have resonance, said John Lohman, publisher of the Corridor Business Journal and one of the primary members of the re-branding task force.

?If we work hard as a region, then hopefully people across the country will know us as the Creative Corridor, and not just Iowa?s Creative Corridor,? he said.

The adjective ?creative? is intended to refer to not just the obvious ?creative? types such as painters, writers and dancers, but also inventors, engineers, farmers and the many other professionals in the Corridor who know their craft, task force members have said.

?Considered one of the nation?s leading economic development regions,ICC emphasizes creative innovation and support that allows individuals, businesses and organizations to transform their future, their company, their industry or even the world,? according to the Creative Corridor?s website.

In the corporate world, branding forces companies to think about what they want to be and what they want to say, said John Murry, a brand expert at the University of Iowa business college.

?Branding is not magic. ? What we?re trying to do is figure out what it is we need to put in the customer?s head that will give us the best chance to succeed,? he said.

The next step for the Creative Corridor should start by the end of this month, with a task force forming to execute the effort?s strategic plan, Lohman said. Chuck Peters, president and CEO of SourceMedia Group, the parent company of The Gazette, is one of the chairs of that task force.

The work so far has been done by volunteers, but Lohman said a part-time employee may be hired, probably by one of the Corridor Business Alliance groups, to help implement the strategic plan.

The alliance, which spearheaded the re-branding effort, is an affiliation of 13 area economic development organizations and companies that promotes a regional approach to economic development.

THINKING REGIONALLY

A lot of work will need to be done inside the Corridor to get people here to use the term, Lohman said. The Creative Corridor has been defined geographically as the Benton, Cedar, Iowa, Johnson, Jones, Linn and Washington counties.

That could be key, as Jerry Anthony, a professor of urban and regional planning at the University of Iowa, said economists believe competition in the coming decades will occur between regions, not countries.

He said this area would be well served by acting regionally. Imagine selling Iowa City?s intellectual capital combined with Cedar Rapids?s manufacturing base and airport, he said.

?If you market this entire area ? Cedar Rapids and Iowa City as a region ? then it has almost everything you would desire to maximize economic benefits,? Anthony said.

There?s often a lot of talk about regionalism, particularly among local governments. But then parochialism takes hold when it comes time to act.

Anthony said that?s because cooperating regionally may cause short-term pain locally.

Dennis Tallman said his printing and marketing company, AlphaGraphics in North Liberty, provides mostly business-to-business services in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. So as other businesses go, so goes AlphaGraphics, and he thinks the Iowa?s Creative Corridor initiative will help.

?When the regional economy does well, all businesses do better,? he said. ?So that?s all we?re trying to do is make sure that we are a strong regional economy.?

4(3.5 stars) A medium-body, moderate-calorie coffee drink
By Snap, Crackle and Pop
The illy issimo Cappucino coffee drink is a well-made, medium-body and moderate calorie drink. It?s produced in Denmark and imported. It has 100 calories and 1.5 grams of fat in an 8.45 ounce drink.

A bottled Starbucks Coffee Frappucino has 200 calories and 3 grams of fat (and it?s slightly larger at 9.5 ounces), so the illy drink offers a lighter alternative if that?s what you?re seeking.

Personally, I prefer a stronger coffee flavor, and am not as concerned about the calories. For a pick-me-up, I often want some calories as well as caffeine. I found the illy drink pleasant, and it?s probably right for some, but most of the time I?d probably buy something else.

The label mentions that it has cocoa, so I was looking for the flavor, but it didn?t seem to me to have much if any cocoa flavor. Since I don?t really want that in a cappucino drink anyway, that?s actually a plus. But if you?re looking for a mocha flavor, try something else.

4Light and Smooth
By Lisa M
I must admit, I have never tried illy coffee drink products before, but I have tried other brands. Assuming this product would be about the same, I eagerly ordered it to review for amazon vine. Well, I was wrong. It is not like the others I have tried, it is much better. Smoother, lighter and less calories. This is a product I would gladly drink more often, as it also has a very good-not too sweet-flavor. I tried the cappuccino, but I see it also comes in another flavor. That is one I would be happy to buy as well. So now I am also eager to try other coffee products from illy, which is a name I have always seen and understand to be high quality. Silly me for waiting so long.

5My Guilty Pleasure?
By DCguy
Yes, its expensive. But, I?ve given up my daily (sometimes more) trip to that huge coffee chain and replaced it with this. Just a enough sugar to made it enjoyable. You need to sip it to fully appreciate.

Mixing Styles With Country French Antiques | Affordable Quality …

Mixing Styles With Country French Antiques
?by: Inessa Stewart

France is known for its innovation in style and fashion in every century. French antiques mark as being highly decorative, elaborate and ostentatious. Great emphasis was placed on decoration and display.

Historically, true French Provincial antiques blended with the farmhouse styles found within different regions of France. This blending became known as French Country Style. Certainly, French Country Style is not a particular period style. Many persons familiar with French antiques have difficulty relating it historically. However, within the design of Country French antiques there are elements of the following periods: a) the Medieval Period; b) the Restoration Period, and the c) Neoclassical Period.

These elements are so well blended that you probably will not recognize each element of style individually. The style becomes original in leaving you with French Country Style. The style represents the farming life of the peasants of France. It later became popular with the middle income earners. In summing up French Country Style furniture, you may say it is a blending of furniture designs from various eras. However, the lines are much more simplistic, the woods more durable and the overall color is lighter.

Country French antique furniture consisted both the sophisticated furniture made in Paris for the royalty, aristocrats and the rich upper bourgeoisie on one hand, and French provincial furniture made in towns that retained the local cultural identity. The rural France had artisans who made furniture that spoke of rural culture and this remained unbroken until the advent of railroads in the mid nineteenth century. All French antique furniture is renowned for its refinement and rich materials and fetches premium prices in auctions.

There was a revolution in the eighteenth and nineteenth century manufacturing industries. An augmented production of furniture increased the popularity of furniture warehouses around the world. The pieces of furniture to gain popularity during these times were tables, commodes, armoires and Chandeliers. French antique furniture can be broadly divided into Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Classical revival, rustic and modern periods.

Country French antiques had a highly developed art of wood carving with a conspicuous and ornamental decorations that represent unique Renaissance period. This can be contrasted to the Italian antique furniture that contained more delicate and intricate lace.

Country French antiques may be considered a good option. They are an assemblage of many antique styles, have interesting history, and are ideal for family life. Tables for the kitchen, hutches, and armoires are classic French Country Style items. Due to its history and broad family appeal, French Country antique is a popular choice amongst persons seeking home-style antique furniture.

7 Tips for How to Sell Books | Business 2 Community

I?ve been working on an updated series of mini eBooks on how to sell books that will address a wide variety of questions on the minds of self-publishers everywhere. In the process of writing, I?ve been developing a short list of the basics of selling books successfully as a self-publisher.

Here it is so far, in no particular order:

1. Let Go of Your Ego

Don?t make the mistake of assuming that your book is better than all of the rest out there ? especially if you?re brand new and have never hit a bestseller?s list in the past. Keep your ego in check and humbly push forward with your book marketing plan.

2. Learn Something about Marketing

Ideally you should learn ALL YOU CAN about marketing, but at the very least you should learn the basics. Start by learnHow to Sell Booksing about the four Ps of marketing. This is what they teach you in marketing 101 and it applies beautifully to selling books. See if your local community college has some inexpensive courses you can take to get more familiar with marketing and sales.

3. Revamp Your Book Cover

One of the first things I tell my clients when they ask me what they can do to sell more books is to redo your book cover. Many times the book cover is the one issue that is preventing people from clicking that ?buy? button and giving your book a try ? especially when it comes to online sales. Get a professional to work on you book cover.

4. Do a ?Price Check?

I cringe when I see a new self-publisher?s paperback novel priced at $20 for 160 pages. Many book buyers won?t even pay $20 for a 500 page book. Check the price tag on your book to see if you might be overcharging. Many brand new self-publishers are finding success with pricing their eBooks very low (99 cents to 2.99 per copy) as a way to get people interested in their work. Then they price their future or backlist titles higher.

5. Get Familiar with Social Media

If you?re not on social media, you need to be. While many social media sites are not a direct line to book sales, they help you build a community and interest around you and your books over time. At the minimum, join Twitter (for posting your blog posts and updates about goings on) and Facebook (to connect with book clubs, avid reader groups and other authors).

6. Take a Class in Sales or Public Speaking

If you?re not comfortable communicating with others, whether offline or online, take a class to teach you sales and public speaking techniques. These skills will become invaluable to you as you go forward with your book selling efforts, including attending book signings, doing interviews or even just talking to people on Twitter.

7. Seek Reviews

Reviews are solid gold when it comes to selling books, especially when you?re selling them online. People are social creatures?we listen to the opinions of others when making a decision on whether to buy something. Seek genuine reviews from your targeted readers early on in the book publishing process.

Disco legend Donna Summer dead at 63

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Disco legend Donna Summer died?Thursday at age 63, reportedly?after a battle with cancer.

“Early this morning, we lost Donna Summer Sudano, a woman of many gifts, the greatest being her faith,” the singer’s family said in a statement. “While we grieve her passing, we are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy. Words truly can’t express how much we appreciate your prayers and love for our family at this sensitive time.”

TMZ was the first to report the singer’s?death, and the site?reports that she was recording an album at the time of her death.

The Grammy-winning singer, nicknamed?the Queen of Disco,?had numerous hits in both the 1970s and 1980s, including “Last Dance,” “She Works Hard for the Money” and “Bad Girls.”

Michael Ochs Archives / Getty Images

Her duet with Barbra Streisand, “No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)” was one of four Summer songs that topped the Billboard Top 100 charts.

“I was shocked to hear about Donna,” Streisand said in a statement. “She was so vital the last time I saw her a few months ago. I loved doing the duet with her. She had an amazing voice and was so talented.”

Summer was the first female artist to?chart with?back-to-back multi-platinum double albums.

She appeared in the 1978 film, “Thank God It’s Friday,” which won the best original song Oscar for “Last Dance.” Summer also appeared twice?on the 1990s hit TV show “Family Matters,” playing Steve Urkel’s Aunt Oona from Altoona. In 2011, she was a guest judge on music reality show “Platinum Hit,” and she performed with the female finalists on the 2008 “American Idol” finale.

Summer won five Grammy Awards and six American Music Awards, and charted three multi-platinum albums.

In 2009, she sang at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert honoring President Barack Obama in Oslo, Norway.

In a statement released by the White House, Obama said: “Her voice was unforgettable, and the music industry has lost a legend far too soon. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Donna’s family and her dedicated fans.?

Musician Questlove of The Roots tweeted, “I know that the whole ‘disco sucks’ stuff left a bad taste in the mouths of some. But Summer’s work was really a credible legacy.”

Wrote Mario Lopez, “R.I.P Donna Summer … I remember roller skating to hits like ‘Last Dance’ ‘Hot Stuff’ & ‘Bad Girls.’ Synonymous with the 70′s.”

Summer was also a formally trained painter. In 2010, she told Atlantic City Weekly that she sold her first painting for $38,000 and thought, “I may want to stop singing now.” Summer estimated she had sold close to a million dollars worth of art.

She is survived by her husband, musician Bruce Sudano,?three daughters, and four grandchildren.
